I finally remembered my camera for open mic on Wednesday. The quality isn't all that good but there's some fun moments recorded for your enjoyment. We had a bunch of participants and about 120 for dinner and cocktails. A very enjoyable evening was had by all. AND we got to enjoy it all under a full moon. There were a few moon songs performed in honor of the full moon but this is my favorite of the evening. Mainly because my daughter's favorite movie of all times is "Breakfast at Tiffany's."

Open Mic Returns for Another Season

Wow what a crazy first open mic for this season!  Lots of great costumes and way more people than expected. Fortunately there were enough musicians to entertain us. Of course Kay kept us organized and Gilles ran the sound very nicely in Jon's absence. I'm going to name names by memory. (yeah, that memory)  If I've left anyone out, please let me know. You'll get a special write up.

Special thanks to my brave friend Larry who played for his first time in public and was first up with with his baritone Ukulele with some great old tunes that fit the Halloween occasion.

Trish and her wonderful daughter followed. Tish sang about one of her favorite subjects: Classic Cars. Tishe's daughter (by now you've figured out that I've forgotten her name again) sang a beautiful song all by herself that sounded like Latin but I didn't get a chance to ask her. Nice voice.


Big Jim is back too and played a couple of his favorite numbers to an appreciative crowd with a couple of backup musicians: Ed on harp, or should I say Dorothy as pictured in the photo and Bob on guitar.

Sandy and Rio gave us some nice old standards. Rio sang and played the conga, Sandy coaxed sweet chords out of his black guitar for Rio to sing to.

We were treated to some fellows who traveled quite a ways to join us. I met Pat in Loreto one day by accident and we soon figured out that we were both musicians. We kept in touch with me asking him to come down at every opportunity. He showed up with one of his band members (Whistlin' Rufus) and a friend.  They gave us a nice combination of mandolin, harmonica and finger style blues guitar.

Naturally Jeanetti Spaghetti contributed some great Halloween songs like "monster mash" complete with crowd participation while dressed in full costume as "the queen of the night."

She was followed by the "Wolf" man from Cabo who quieted the crowd with a lively fiddle tune along with Ray on bass.  Then closed the show with a jam joined by most of the musicians.

Thanks to all the great musicians who came and played. It was a lovely evening.

Live Music and Breakfast Buffet Right Here in Los Barriles!!

Come on in for our first live music Sunday of the new season. Our new friends, Jeff and Julie will be performing this Sunday the 14th. (They aren't actually Cuban as the illustration depicts but I don't have their picture and I like the illustration.) They will cover various artists like James Taylor, The Eagles, Loggins and Messina and others and play a few original pieces. The buffet will include a bunch of good stuff plus a free Mimosa! If you come before 8:30am, you can order off the regular menu.

The buffet will start at 9; the music starts at 10. Join us for a fun morning with live music and good food all for 150 pesos!

Open Mic is Back!

Are you ready for some music? Roadrunner Cafe Open Mic will officially start on Halloween this year. Some of our local talent will be here plus I know of some visitors that will probably come. We will follow the same schedule as before: dinner at 6, music at 7 to 9:30. Also, we will continue to support the East Cape Guild's education program. Roadrunner Presents: New Reeper Off-Road 4x4

Roadrunner Cafe presents the new Reeper 4x4! Aldo Favio, owner of Dunes, Tours and Travel, will demo 2 models of the Reeper this Thursday the 20th starting at 11AM. Come check these things out. They look good but I haven't driven one yet.


Roadrunner will have breakfast specials along with the regular menu items. Not hungry for a full breakfast? How about a fresh pastry and the best coffee in town? We also have free WiFi for our customers.

Spider in the Kitchen!

The rain was great, the air is freshened and the the countryside is turning emerald green for the first time in a few years. However, there are always unexpected side affects. I got a phone call the other day from the bakery. Donna explained in her best controlled voice that she had a large spider in her kitchen. She wondered if I would like to see it and get it the heck out!! It was very docile; probably was hoping for a warm place to live. Well, the rain was done and we figured he could live outside just fine. Here is our temporary guest spider before she was returned to the wild.

Was There Life Before the Roadrunner Cafe?

The Roadrunner Cafe and Bakery is a family business. It opened in 2006 on the heals of hurricane John. Soon after, Donna started offering fresh baked breads and pastries. Most of our customers know Donna in that capacity. What many of you don't know is that before the restaurant opened, her prime hobby and passion was making tile murals. Her sister had started working with clay and gave the Donna the bug. She was and is partial to the efforts of the California tile companies from the 20's and 30's.

To the left is one panel of a 2 part mural Donna made. This is a replica of an early California design.

She also made her own molds and created some beautiful accent pieces. Here is a sconce that follows the style of early California. Also an example that is of her own design



              


About 8 years ago, she wanted to find enough beach glass to make a mosaic. Seemed like an impossible task but the upside is that I got to spend a LOT of time at the beach. Here is one of the resulting murals made from the little pieces of colored glass picked up at the beach. It is about 18" in diameter.
